YOUR UNION…

a Union for  the 21st century

Everybody who wants to lead an organisation must have some "big ideas" that they think are important. Here are some of Bill’s. If you know him, these won’t be a surprise – they were not just "dreamed up" for the Officers' election. Bill has been promoting such ideas for a long time…

How about these for some "must be"s?

We must be a member-led, teacher-led Union

There’s been too much emphasis in the past on top-down ‘politicking’ and internal squabbling - popular with the little factions that vie to run the Union, but which have left most teachers cold

Policy should come from members, and National Officers and Executive should be held accountable for pursuing it

They should always pursue the view they believe to be right and supported by their members, and not just ‘toe a line’ or court popularity with one group or another.

We must be a dynamic Union

Honest debate between sincerely held evidence-based views, and conducted openly with members, will help the Union to really meet the demands of the day

We need diversity of view, not uniformity within a faction, to arrive at the best ways forwards

We must be an independent union

We should never be in the pocket of Government through "Social Partnership" deals, like the ‘workload agreement’

We should never accept exclusion from discussions, consultations or negotiations with employers or government as a result of our independent position

We must be a Union that speaks up for the integrity of

the teaching profession

We must maximise unity in the NUT and guard against unnecessary divisions whether it be on political, gender, ethnic, sexual orientation or other grounds. We need to speak for all teachers

We must always keep up the pressure for a single union for all teachers.

We must be an active & powerful Union

Teachers deserve to have their voice strongly heard & children have a right to teachers that can assert themselves above political agendas and populist policies

We will use every procedure and process – but, very often, union strength comes from members thinking and acting together

We must campaign for the whole education service

Both resisting attacks – and promoting positive policies for an integrated comprehensive state education service for the 21st century – as in "Bringing Down The Barriers".

We must develop a genuine ‘organising culture’

We can make a lot of noise without it, but we can only win with it.
