Bill is supporting

Martin Reed for Deputy General Secretary

and

Simon Jones for Vice President

I think that both Martin and Simon are very strong candidates. Both have clear experience of leadership and organisation at local and national levels.

Both have demonstrated that they think strategically about where the union should be heading, and how our particular campaigns fit in with this wider strategy.

Both have a long history in unequivocally supporting internal unity in the Union and the absolute necessity of organising for Professional Unity – one union for all teachers.

Though both have been involved with different “factions” in the past, both now view this factionalism as largely destructive and seek a new way forward.

BILL GREENSHIELDS, NUT PRESIDENT 2008-09

supports Martin Reed:

"We need a Deputy General Secretary who is a proven campaigner and also a strategic thinker.

-  An organiser of members and a person with clear experience of organising the work of the Union at national level.

-  A champion of teachers and teaching, with real leadership qualities who, is also in touch with the wide range of views amongst our membership.

-  A leader with a long term commitment to professional unity, and a real understanding of the organising agenda to build our Union in associations, divisions and at school level.

-  A stout defender of state education.

-  A communicator with the ability to represent us in the wider trade union movement, across all communities, and with government.

All of the candidates in the DGS election have SOME of these qualities, but Martin has ALL of them - and more. I urge you to nominate him, and help to ensure his election."

BILL GREENSHIELDS, Ex-President says,

“Simon would make a great Vice-President and subsequently President of the Union.

He has a proven track record of imaginative and effective organisation at local level, and has played an important role on the National Executive – always full of ideas, and open to those of others - always rooted in members’ priorities.

He is a strong and consistent advocate of professional unity – committed to unity within our own Union, and to working hard to build unity amongst all teachers.

Simon always puts our Union policy and activities within the big picture of the very real struggle for the future of the state education service, and thinks in strategic terms about how we can win – not simply “protest”.

He combines real experience with relative youth… just what we need!

I urge you to give him your number 1 vote.”
